Fire Full Time, Fire Marshal

Job Description

The Town of Southbury is hiring for a full-time Fire Marshal, 35 hours/week with a comprehensive benefits package.  This position is responsible for planning, organizing and administering comprehensive fire inspections, investigations and prevention and education programs in accordance with the Connecticut General Statutes and CT Fire Safety Code.

Duties include: completing building plan reviews, enforcing fire code, issuing and monitoring permits for open burning and fireworks and working effectively with agencies, officials, business owners and the general public.  Responsible for development and management of the Fire Marshal budget and supervision of staff.

Primary Accountabilities:

This position is responsible for planning, organizing and administering comprehensive fire inspections, investigations and prevention and education programs in accordance with the Connecticut General Statutes and CT Fire Safety Code.

  • Responsible for completion of building plan reviews, fire code enforcement, issuing and monitoring of permits for open burning and fireworks and working effectively with agencies, officials, business owners and the general public.
  • Requires strict enforcement of all applicable fire and life safety codes and laws.
  • Responsible for development and management of the Fire Marshal budget and supervision of staff.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current and valid State of Connecticut Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal Certification. Graduation from high school plus Associates degree in Fire Science or related field.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience related to Fire Marshal or firefighting duties or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess or obtain certification as an Open Burning Official.
  • Must have a valid Motor Vehicle License.

Required Equipment Operations

  • Operation of computer, copy machine, telephone and radios.
  • Operation of motor vehicle and cameras and field equipment necessary to determine the cause and origin of fires.

Required Physical Effort

  • Ability to work in extreme temperatures and weather conditions to determine causes and origins of fires; climbing of ladders to inspect hood systems; ability to enter basements and attic spaces; use of shovel, rake and various hand tools and instruments for fire investigation and code compliance inspections.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs. of supplies and equipment without assistance.

Consults with Southbury Volunteer Fire Association, Police Department, Board of Selectmen, Town Attorney, State Courts, Town Building and Land Use Departments and Housatonic Valley Department of Health.
