Police Full Time, Jail Diversion Clinician

Job Description

High Point & Affiliated Organizations is a health and human service agency whose mission is to treat and prevent substance use disorders and mental illness. The High Point Jail Diversion Clinician will be assigned to the Bridgewater police Department and neighboring communities. High Point has programs located throughout Southeastern Massachusetts offering a full continuum of care for substance use and mental health treatment, including inpatient, outpatient, residential, and community-based services. Programs and services also assist survivors of abuse, violence, and families experiencing homelessness. High Point believes that everyone has inherent goodness, worth, and dignity. Outpatient substance use disorder and mental health services are located across Southeastern Massachusetts in Brockton, Middleborough, New Bedford, Plymouth, and Taunton. At most sites, services are provided during the day and many clinics have evening hours. We offer individual, group, medication management, and family services to address diverse clinical needs. An interdisciplinary team of professionals includes licensed social workers, mental health clinicians, Master’s level clinicians, certified addictions clinicians, psychiatrists, and psychologists.


  • Master’s degree in counseling field;
  • Licensed as LMHC, LICSW, LADC,1 (not required);
  • One year of emergency services experience required;
  • Experience working with criminal justice system preferred;
  • Jail diversion experience preferred;
  • Extensive knowledge of DSM-V;
  • In-depth knowledge of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter and DSM-V applications;
  • Knowledge of mental health and substance use disorders;
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts levels of care and referral for access to treatment;
  • Ability to complete computerized evaluations;
  • Ability to work independently at assigned police station
  • Must have valid MA driver’s license and use of car.


  • Attend roll call at assigned police station;
  • Receive and respond to pending assignments;
  • Accompany officers on patrol for portions of the work shift;
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with all members of the police department;
  • Perform evaluations of clients in acute crisis (including suicide/homicide assessments, mental status exams, evaluation of support networks and resource availability) and provides short term intensive crisis intervention with client;
  • Conduct on-scene evaluations in locations such as homes, schools, shelter and other community settings;
  • Screen clients for admissions to hospitals, diversionary programs and crisis stabilization unit;
  • Present level of care assessments to managed care companies, hospitals and other agencies that offer appropriate services for client;
  • Provide follow up services to individuals who have had an emergency encounter;
  • Coordinate collaborate with community stakeholders;
  • Educate the community regarding jail diversion services;
  • Document thoroughly, legibly and promptly, all client interventions;
  • Maintain accurate client records in accordance with regulatory, departmental and agency standards.
  • Complete all necessary paperwork and billing documentation;
  • Collect data and submit reports as required by assigned police stations Jail Diversion contract with Department of Mental Health and by other funding sources as applicable;
  • Enter all evaluations on computer;
  • Attend and participate in meetings as directed and care coordination and planning meetings with the assigned police agency and community providers;
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, families, other providers, funding sources, etc.;
  • Participate in quality management initiatives;
  • Provide orientation, training and supervisor of other Jail Diversion Clinicians at assigned police station;
  • Provide training to officers in the assigned police agency on topics that include, but not limited to, basic crisis intervention strategies, signs and symptoms of mental illness and suicide risk/prevention;
  • Conduct proactive outreach to identify people in the assigned community who are in need of mental health or other support services;
