Job Description

The Town of Stow is seeking an experienced, professional Fire Captain to join our leadership team. Reporting directly to the Fire Chief, this position serves as the first-line supervisor, responsible for managing personnel and operations during fire and emergency incidents, overseeing code enforcement, training, and public safety initiatives, and assisting in the daily administration of the department.

The Fire Captain plays a critical leadership role, ensuring the department operates efficiently, safely, and in alignment with the mission of serving and protecting the residents of Stow. This is not just a job – it’s a career with purpose and leadership at its core.

Key Responsibilities include supervising and directing Permanent Firefighters and Call Lieutenants during emergency responses and station operations. Coordinate and oversee code enforcement activities, including inspections, plan reviews, and public education. Support department training initiatives and ensure compliance with local and state standards. Act as Assistant to the Emergency Management Director and serve as Acting Fire Chief when designated. Assist with budget preparation, payroll, administrative reporting, and interdepartmental coordination. Write and manage grants to support departmental programs and projects. Maintain departmental compliance with reporting requirements (NFIRS, MFIRS, exposure and injury reports). Support recruitment and disciplinary procedures under the guidance of the Fire Chief.

Required Qualifications: 5+ Years of fire service experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or command-level role. Certification as Firefighter I/II and Massachusetts EMT. Massachusetts Level 1 Fire Inspector certification. NIMS 400 certification. Valid Massachusetts driver’s license and clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications: Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field. Fire Officer I/II training. Experience in a call/hybrid fire department structure.

This is a 40 hour/week union position, with a FY26 hourly rate of $41.65. Benefit eligible. Position open until filled with a rolling review of resumes as received.
