Job Description
The Town of Hancock, New Hampshire (population approximately 1,750) is seeking qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Chief of Police. This is an opportunity for an experienced law enforcement professional to lead a small, community-focused department and serve a rural municipality in the Monadnock Region. The Hancock Police Department consists of the Chief of Police, two (2) full-time officers, and one (1) full-time Administrative Assistant. The Department works collaboratively with Town officials and neighboring law enforcement agencies to provide professional, lawful, and community-oriented police services. The Chief of Police is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and administration of the Hancock Police Department. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to build a respected department that earns the confidence of residents, community organizations, and surrounding municipalities. This hands-on position requires a team-oriented leader who values collaboration, transparency, and the highest standards of professional conduct.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities • Provide leadership and supervision of all department personnel • Enforce state laws and town ordinances • Develop and implement departmental policies, procedures, and training programs • Prepare and administer the departmental budget and related warrant articles • Oversee recruitment, training, evaluation, and discipline of personnel • Coordinate mutual aid and regional law enforcement cooperation • Serve as a professional advisor to Town officials on public safety matters • Act as the Department’s representative to the public and other agencies Minimum Qualifications • Current New Hampshire Police Officer certification, or the ability to obtain certification through the New Hampshire Police Standards and Training Council • Ability to meet and maintain all certification, fitness, and continuing education requirements • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or command role • Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a background investigation • Demonstrated integrity, sound judgment, and commitment to ethical policing Desired Qualifications • Experience leading or assisting in leadership of a small or mid-sized police department • Knowledge of community policing and problem-solving strategies • Experience with municipal budgeting, policy development, and personnel administration • Strong oral and written communication skills
