Job Description

The Town of Monson, Massachusetts, is seeking qualified and motivated candidates for the position of Police Lieutenant with the Monson Police Department. This leadership role is responsible for supervising sworn personnel, managing daily operations, and supporting the Chief of Police in implementing department policies, community policing initiatives, and strategic goals. THE CANDIDATE

The lieutenant acts as second in command of the department carrying out his/her responsibilities under the general supervision of the Police Chief. The lieutenant’s principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assisting the Police Chief in planning, organizing and directing the patrol, investigative, administrative, internal affairs, and support service activities of the Department. The lieutenant assumes responsibility for the department in the Police Chief’s absence and may be required to work outside of normal business hours.
Candidates must possess a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of police administration and of approved police methods and procedures; state and federal laws and regulations affecting police work; criminal law and modern techniques of criminal investigations; labor law and collective bargaining; and technology used in police work.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Monson Police Department is dedicated to delivering both traditional and non-traditional law enforcement services to residents and visitors alike. The department operates with a strong emphasis on compassion, integrity, and ethical conduct, ensuring that every interaction reflects the values of the community it serves.

The Monson Police Department is a full-service Police Department with an authorized staffing level of 17 sworn officers. The current staffing model includes a chief, one lieutenant, three sergeants, nine patrol officers, one canine officer, one school resource officer and one detective.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Public Administration or related field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education, relevant training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Candidates must be active in the law enforcement field to apply.
  • Ten years of progressive law enforcement experience, with three years of supervisory experience at the rank of sergeant or above.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • Must have a valid Massachusetts Firearms License or the ability to obtain one upon hire.
  • Applicants must be a graduate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Municipal Police Training Committee (MPTC) Basic Recruit Officer Academy (or eligible for a Permanent Exemption by the MPTC) and must satisfy all requirements set forth by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission for certification as a Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

The successful candidate will negotiate an employment contract with the town. Monson offers a highly competitive compensation and benefits package with a salary of $88,000 – $110,000 commensurate with qualifications. Additional benefits include group health insurance, dental insurance and take-home vehicle. The town also offers an optional employee-paid 457(b) deferred compensation plan, paid vacation days, holidays, paid personal days and paid sick days.
