Full-Time Dispatcher

Chief Michael Dwyer has announced that the West Newbury Police Department seeks to fill an opening for a full-time dispatcherThe schedule will be determined by the Chief of Police.  Dispatchers are responsible for receiving calls for service in a courteous and professional manner, determining the needs of the caller, and directing the proper agencies to assist the caller in meeting their needs.  Dispatchers must also provide emergency medical dispatch when necessary.  In addition, dispatchers obtain and relay information to the responding agencies and assists these agencies in receiving whatever support the responders need.  The dispatcher maintains a daily log of accurate call information, monitors the activity of all public safety units and area radio channels, and provides assistance to the public and other town departments.

Full-time dispatchers must be certified in, or be willing to obtain certification in NG911, CJIS, APCO Telecommunicator, APCO EMD, CPR & AED, and NIMS ICS 100 and 700.  They must be able to communicate clearly and distinctly in person, over the phone, and on the radio.  They need to be able to process and document important information and take quick and accurate notes.  Dispatchers must have the ability to hear and understand messages, BOLO’s, and conversations, and manage hysteria threshold calls.  It is essential to be able to converse on the radio and telephone in concise terms and to be familiar with terms and codes used by Police and Fire Department.  Dispatchers need to maintain composure during stressful situations and be discreet and maintain department integrity by not discussing aspects of ongoing cases outside of the department.  In addition, dispatchers should be able to recall names, street address, vehicle license plate numbers, radio codes, and possess a solid understanding of town geography (street/landmark names and locations).

Other Requirements:  Full-time dispatchers must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and be a high school graduate.
  • Present a business-like appearance and comply with department dress code standards and policies.
  • Be free of mental illness, psychopathology, or abnormal mental conditions that could result in poor impulse control, dishonesty, inability to deal with job stress, immature or criminal behavior, or substance abuse.
  • Perform mentally fatiguing and stressful tasks with a minimum of difficulty.
  • Pass a background check including fingerprints on file with the FBI law Enforcement Division.
  • Have no serious criminal or motor vehicle violation records that would indicate disrespect of the law, dishonesty or criminal behavior, or inability or unwillingness to follow rules and regulations, or inability to command respect of co-workers and have a good reputation in the community.
  • Be skilled in the use of communications radio equipment, telephones, computers, audio equipment, 911 equipment, video equipment, and other office equipment.
