Police Reserve/Part-Time Police Officer, West Newbury
Job Description
The Town of West Newbury is currently seeking to fill openings for reserve/part-time Massachusetts certified police officer positions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Applicants must be a minimum of 21 years of age, a U.S. Citizen, and have a minimum of a high school diploma (college degree is preferred).
- Candidates must also possess a valid Police Basic Recruit Training Certificate (Reserve) or MPTC full-time academy, certifying them to work as a police officer in the State of Massachusetts.
- Applicants must possess or have the ability to obtain a driver’s license, Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms, and POST certification.
- Successful candidates must successfully pass a background check, a medical exam, and a psychological exam.
- They will also be subject to an interview.
- Applicants must reside within 30 miles of West Newbury after hiring.
General Duties/Responsibilities
- Exercise authority consistent with the obligations imposed by the oath of office , U.S. and State laws and the Constitution.
- Coordinate efforts with those of other members of the Department so that teamwork may ensure continuity of purpose and maximum achievement of police objectives.
- Communicate to superiors and to fellow officers all information obtained which is pertinent to the achievement of police objectives. Be accountable to superior officers and obey all lawful orders.
- Respond punctually to all assignments
- Acquire and record information concerning events that have taken place since the last tour of duty.
- Record activity during tour of duty in the manner prescribed by proper authority.
- Maintain weapons and equipment in a functional, presentable condition.
- Assist citizens requesting assistance or information. Courteously explain any instances where jurisdiction does not lie with the Police Department and suggest other procedures to be
followed. - Be accountable for the proper marking, securing, receipting and proper transporting of all evidence and property coming into custody.
- Answer questions asked by the general public, counsel juveniles and adults when necessary and refer them to persons or agencies where they can obtain further assistance.
- Preserve the peace at public gatherings, neighborhood disputes and family quarrels.
- Serve and deliver warrants, summonses, subpoenas, and other official papers promptly and accurately when so directed by a superior officer.
- Confer with court prosecutors and testify in court.
- Accomplish other general duties as they are assigned or become necessary.
